Elusive? Absolutely, yet at the same time colors can be so completely present as well. In fact, redundantly present. We don’t have to do anything for colors to do their work. How is it that colors are so powerful? And do we see them as they are, or…? As a color consultant I know that if I pick a red and take it into a room, it may not present as red. It is maddening! Why do colors play tricks on us?
Yes, colors represent a scientific challenge that designers are all too aware of. We studied colors and understand how the light and architectural elements of a given space will dictate how a particular color will present. Selecting flat, eggshell or glossy finishes will also play a major role. Apart from that, we have to be aware of the emotional impact of colors and how they correspond with our client’s personal taste and design style. A successful color palette will be just like a silent partner, one that is not immediately noticed but is always there, to bring joy and comfort, supporting us and having us throw off our shoes and put our feet on the coffee table after a long day. We are happy!
